GOMA, DRC — The number of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 1,000, exposing a deepening health crisis in the conflict-ridden region.

Health officials say the outbreak, which began in a remote mining area, has been exacerbated by armed conflict and population displacement. International aid agencies have struggled to reach affected communities.

The World Health Organization has called for urgent international support, warning that without additional resources, the outbreak could spread to neighboring countries including Uganda and Rwanda.
