CAPE TOWN, South Africa — South Africa’s withdrawal from hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has sparked debate across the continent about infrastructure readiness and financial commitments.
The South African Football Association cited economic constraints and existing stadium maintenance issues as reasons for pulling out. Other nations have criticized the decision, calling it a missed opportunity.
“South Africa has the best stadiums in Africa, but we cannot afford the costs at this time,” said an SAFA official.
