JUBA, South Sudan — The National Elections Commission (NEC) has officially announced December 22, 2026 as the date for South Sudan’s first general elections since independence.
The announcement, made during a press conference in Juba, marks a critical milestone in the country’s democratic transition. NEC officials expressed confidence in their ability to organize credible polls despite ongoing security challenges.
“This is a historic moment for South Sudan,” said the NEC chairman. “We urge all political actors to commit to peaceful participation.”
