JUBA, South Sudan — Civil society organizations are demanding amendments to the National Security Service (NSS) Act following a series of arbitrary detentions of activists and journalists.

The groups say the current law gives security services unchecked powers, leading to human rights violations. They want parliament to review the legislation to ensure proper oversight.

“We cannot have a security service that operates above the law,” said one activist. “These detentions are a clear violation of our constitution.”
