ENTEBBE, Uganda — Former Kenyan Justice Minister Martha Karua was detained at Entebbe International Airport upon her arrival to attend a court hearing for detained Ugandan opposition leader Erias Lukwago.

Karua, who is also a senior counsel in Kenya, was reportedly held for several hours before being denied entry and ordered to return to Nairobi. Ugandan authorities cited security concerns.

The incident has strained diplomatic relations between the two East African neighbors, with Kenya’s Foreign Ministry demanding an explanation from Kampala.
