NAIROBI, Kenya — More than half of Members of Parliament were absent during the crucial Finance Bill 2026 vote, sparking outrage among constituents and civil society.
According to parliamentary records, 187 MPs failed to show up for the vote, including some who had previously been vocal critics of the bill. Their absence allowed the controversial legislation to pass with minimal opposition.
“This is a betrayal of the highest order,” said one civil society leader. “These MPs spent weeks condemning the bill in public, only to disappear when it mattered most.”
