The Ugandan government has announced an ambitious plan to register one million vehicles with digital number plates by 2026, as the deadline for full implementation of the digital vehicle registration system approaches.

The digital plates are part of a broader government initiative to enhance vehicle tracking, improve security, and boost revenue collection from the transport sector.

Implementation Challenges

While the government remains optimistic about meeting the target, transport operators have raised concerns about the costs and logistics of transitioning to the new system.

The Uganda Revenue Authority has established registration centers across the country to facilitate the transition and has warned that non-compliance will result in penalties after the deadline.
