JUBA, South Sudan – South Sudan’s Vice President, General Taban Deng Gai, has revealed that he has been unable to meet President Salva Kiir Mayardit for nearly a year, raising serious concerns about internal coordination within the country’s top leadership.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Taban expressed frustration over what he described as obstruction by officials within the Office of the President. He disclosed that he last met with President Kiir after returning from Unity State in May 2025 and has since failed to secure another meeting.

“It is difficult to believe that a vice president cannot meet the president. Who can believe? You will not believe it,” he said.

Political Implications

The statement has raised significant concerns about internal coordination and communication within South Sudan’s top leadership, particularly at a time when the country continues to face mounting political and security challenges. The apparent disconnect between the President and one of his Vice Presidents comes as the nation prepares for scheduled elections in December 2026.

Taban Deng Gai has served as one of South Sudan’s Vice Presidents in the unity government since February 2020, having previously served as First Vice President from July 2016 to February 2020. His inability to access the President suggests potential fractures within the leadership structure that could impact governance and stability.

No Official Response

As of this publication, no official response has been issued by the Office of the President regarding these claims. The silence from the presidency has only fueled speculation about the state of relations between the country’s top leaders.

Political analysts warn that such public disclosures of internal rifts could undermine confidence in the government as it navigates complex peace implementation processes and prepares for the upcoming electoral period.
