PIBOR, South Sudan — The chief of Pibor has suspended all gold mining activities in Raad County following escalating intercommunal violence linked to resource competition.

The decision comes after weeks of clashes between rival groups, resulting in dozens of deaths and displacement of hundreds of families. Local officials say the mining suspension is temporary pending security improvements.

“We cannot allow our people to die over gold,” said the chief. “Security must come first.”
