Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga has called on his supporters to reject the government of President William Ruto, claiming that the disputed election last August had resulted in an illegitimate government. Odinga’s coalition, the One Kenya Alliance, has recently presented new evidence of electoral rigging, leading Odinga to declare that the Kenya Kwanza government should resign. Ruto’s coalition had narrowly won the election, but the result was met with chaos at the national tallying center. Despite a ruling by the Supreme Court that upheld Ruto’s victory, Odinga is now demanding that the process of reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) be carried out by the Kenyan people, rather than being single-handedly done by Ruto. Odinga also urged Kenyans to resist the government’s “punitive taxes” on basic goods such as flour and electricity.
