UN Commission on Human Rights inquiry finds South Sudan leaders driving country toward war and mass atrocity crimes

A UN Commission on Human Rights inquiry has found that South Sudan’s political and military leaders are actively driving the country toward full-scale war and mass atrocity crimes.
The commission’s report, released this week, documents systematic human rights violations and warns that without immediate international intervention, the situation could deteriorate into genocide.
Elections at Risk
The ruling party’s plan to conduct the first national election in December 2026 appears increasingly unrealistic amid the escalating violence. The commission noted that credible electoral processes are impossible “in a context where civic space is repressed, conflict rages, and more than three million people are internally displaced.”
International Response
Human rights organizations are calling for targeted sanctions against military and political leaders responsible for the violence, while humanitarian agencies scramble to assist displaced populations.
